Hello Giovanni,
Thanks for putting up this site. Did you create this on wordpress? It looks great!
Your weather station is the best I’ve seen. Where is your anemometer? I’ve become a weather junkie too, but I have a lot more questions than answers.
If I can help with any aviation-related resources let me know. For example, most airports have an AWOS that can be phoned for an up to the minute report, but you probably know that. Have you seen adds.aviationweather.gov? Take a look at PIREPS, or pilot reports, for first hand human-weather-balloon data. You may be way ahead of me; let me know.
Anyway, thanks for sharing your passion for wx. I’ll be visiting your site daily!

Greetings David,
Thank you for writing such a nice comment. Yes. I created this blog site on wordpress. It took me about 10 hours of serious tinkering before I was happy with it. My anemometer is attached to a 20 ft. pole on my roof -it gets plenty of wind up there:)
Those aviation resources are great. I am aware of them but haven’t had the time to dig in very far. Are you a pilot? Back in the day I remember watching AM Weather on PBS. It was the best 15 minutes of education I never got in school
Please send me more aviation links/info as I will incorporate them into this site.
Thanks again and write again soon,
Giovanni
David
Thanks for such a great service. I visit often for up to the minute info.I appreciate your weather analyizing/forecasting skills also.
Thanks
Thank you Steve! now that the weather is getting active again I will be posting with even more frequency.
Ciao,
Giovanni
Hello Giovanni,
Great weather, eh? It’s so nice to see things happening when I look at the sky, or at the pacific satellite. makes life more interesting.
Your synopses are the best I’ve seen. Thank you for your efforts.
BTW, saw you picture gallery. My favorite is one in Truckee, I think it was, in the valley near the airport? Beautifully framed S-curves winding toward the mountain.
Enjoy!

Hello Giovanni,
This is Roland from Cascade shores. We wrote back and forth a few times in the past. I recently found your website. I want to compliment you on the fine job you’re doing. As far as I know, you are the only one who provides such a detailed analysis and forecast for western Nevada County. We live in a unique area as far as climate is concerned and I don’t think we get enough coverage here from the NWS. Your website has filled a real need. Keep up the good work! I’ll be checking your site daily.
BTW, I currently have an older WX station with only a COM port interface (La Crosse WS2308). I was using it to upload to wunderground but it’s just not reliable. I’m looking to upgrade. Do you have a recommendation on a good wireless WX station with USB interface?
Thanks,
Roland
P.S. – It is about 9:30 PM on 2/10. We currently have about an inch of new snow from this latest storm. Temp has been fluctuating between 29.8 and 30.0 for the last half hour or so and the wind has been gusting from the S. I’m at 3450′ elevation.
Hello Roland,
I remember you. Good to hear from you. I’m very excited that this site is helping people.. That’s always been my intention and my passion. I absolutely hate to hear when people get stuck or hurt because the forecast was not granular enough. The National Weather Service are great people and provide me with much of the information I use to analyze our weather, but they are based in Rancho Cordova and don’t have any local affiliates. So my goal is to be their unofficial eyes here for Nevada City. Thanks for coming to my site. Your comment made my day
About your WX station.. I highly recommend the Davis Vantage Pro II (I have the Davis Vantage Pro I) with the USB Data Logger http://www.ambientweather.com/61dawivaprow.html It’s not cheap. The whole kit will run you over $500. Another great option that already includes a USB connection is the Oregon Scientific WMR200A http://www.ambientweather.com/orwmr200.html It’s more affordable at $279 My friend has this station and he loves it. Let me know if you any help setting these up. Have a great evening.
Giovanni
Hey Giovanni,
I’m going with the Davis Vantage Pro II and data logger. I’m ordering it today.
I think I’ll take you up on your offer to help with setup.
Thanks again, talk to you soon.

Hi Giovanni! I am also a weather fanatic (mostly snow) and really love your site! My query is this: Did you live here when GV/NC got pummelled with feet of snow either in Feb of 1989 or 1990? People still call it the 100 year storm, yet I can’t find any archives on it. (I wish we could get that much again, but it would cause economic hardship at a bad time) Sure would be fun, though. I didn’t live here at the time and people have all kinds of stories about it, but I want to learn the meterology behind how it happened. Thanks!
Thank you for putting together such an awesome and informative website. I completely enjoy reading your take on the forecasts and looking at your weather gauges etc.

Hi Giovanni,
I think broadcasting a live show w/video on Sundays is a great idea. Looking forward to watching.

Hey man thanks for putting together this site. For a whitewater kayaker like myself and my buddies, a comprehensive site like this is invaluable.
Hey Giovanni,
Great update to your site! I’ve had your site bookmarked for awhile, but it seems much richer than when I last visited. I especially like the detailed discussion of incoming storms. A question – how can I get a storm summary for the season as it unfolds. Basically I’m looking for a way to to number the storms as they come in and assign to each basic info (low temperature, high wind gust, precipitation total, and snow level). I want to reference this info to any specific data set that approximates the western county norm – 2000 to 3000 feet. Your location is actually close in elevation to where I live on the other side of Grass Valley, though a good bit higher than the place I work (NCSA). Anyway, you seem to be looking at lots of data in addition to your our home weather instrumentation. So, I thought you might be able to suggest a simple way to organize storm data for a season. This is a school project, by the way. I find that the kids get excited to look at each storm as it comes in, to see its path and its effects. Thanks.
Gary
P.S. Greetings to Lenka, Anika and Ian
Hey Gio,
Just wanted to chime in and thank you for putting this site together. We often check it out from our roost here in Florida during the off season (fire season).
During your first show with Dan, he mentioned something about snowbows. Here’s a couple of links to photos I took back in ’04 of the phenom.

In the second photo, you’ll see the RAWS that’s up at the lookout. Not currently functioning….. went belly up in early February, but will likely be back online by June.
Here’s a link:

You might want to consider linking up other RAWS sites from the area to your site. MoData >>> MoBetter. 8^)
Thanks again for the great work!

I love the site and have been checking it regularly as it is often hard to get an accurate local forecast and it is quite nice to see the ‘real time’ weather data. As an avid kayaker and skier, I live by the weather and even posted a link to your site on my facebook page for other outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy. I do, however, miss the write up discussions as I usually don’t listen to podcasts. Thanks for the great site and keep up the good work!

Hi Giovanni,
I thought you might want some feedback on your site…
It’s getting slower, and I miss your textual synopses. They were absolutely the best available! But, unfortunately I usually don’t have time for the podcast…
Best,
David
Hello David,
Sorry about changing the format of my weather discussions. Unfortunately the textual discussions take a lot of time which currently is tough to get due to family and work commitments. The podcasts are an easier and more intimate way to communicate my observations and analyses. By changing over to a podcast, this will allow for me to continue my reports on a daily basis. Otherwise I might have to stop.. Which is not something I want to do. Hopefully you will still come around to the site when you have time. I understand your concerns and value your opinion.
Thank you,
Giovanni
PS. I removed some stray elements from the site that may had been slowing it down. Thanks…
Hi Gio,
I watched your weather station for details of this latest storm, which I am counting as the 2nd of the season, the 1st being a gentle thunderstorm on 9/8 which brought 0.11″ of precip to the local area. What do you think the snow level was for this latest storm? I see snow recordings for the Central Sierra Snow Lab and 2-3″ in the last 24 hours for Sugar Bowl.
Thanks for watching the weather! The 5th Grade class and I look forward to checking in on your site regularly.
Gary
Just a note to say thank you for your site. It is enjoyable for me to check in to “your” forcast and to see live wind, temp, humidity from your station.
Hi Hi Giovanni,
I live in Grass Valley, but often have to work from San Jose. I use your site regularly to check the weather up there, as I live close to yoiu (off slate creek). I’m wondering what kind of hardware/software you are using to get the weather and post it on this site.
Big thanks,
jeff
Greetings (neighbor) Jeff,
Sorry about the delay in writing.. work has me pretty tied up and I get so much email these days it’s hard to keep up. Thanks for visiting the site and sending me a note. Here’s the answer to your question: I’m using Weather Display to upload my weather conditions every 4 seconds to my website and the NWS. I have a Davis Vantage Pro weather station and am using several external sensors for better accuracy. I’m also using Webcam Publisher to upload my webcam images to my site and to the Weather Underground. This has been a work in progress so it has taken me a while to get the site and weather hardware to work together. It’s a ton of fun and I really enjoy providing this service.
Ciao!
Giovanni
Hi Giovanni,
Great Site! We have a small vacation cabin on North Bloomfield and like to check in with Nevada City weather often. My parents just sent me a pic of snow at their place in Lincoln so I thought I would check the “cabin weather”. That’s a good early season snowfall. Here is a link to our weather underground site at our house in Southlake TX (Dallas/Fort Worth area).
http://mysite.verizon.net/terry.schrader/index.htm
We got a crazy snowfall last week here and Houston even got snow.
Good choice on dogs by the way. I see you have a Golden. We have 2 of those!
Greetings,
Sorry about the delay in writing you… It’s been pretty wild at work and I’ve been having a tough writing everyone back on the site. Thanks for the note. I like your weather station in TX.. It’s pretty chilly there right now. Thanks, My Golden retriever is an awesome dog!! They are the best. Thanks for visiting the site. Have a great Winter!
Giovanni
Giovanni:
I hope you don’t mind a non-weather question.
I also have a WordPress website (http://sierravoices.com), and I’ve been trying to install a podcast plugin, but with no success so far.
I see yours works well. May I ask what you are using? (A plugin?).
Thanks.
Don.
Sorry about taking a while to write back.. work is busy and I’ve been getting a ton of email from the site: Here’s what works for me for the podcast embedding. I’m using a plugin called Nasdrave http://blog.nazdrave.net/?page_id=13 It’s very easy to use and it works great for inline players.
Thanks again for enjoying the site.
-Giovanni
Hi!
I never miss a day during the stormy season. Love the site.
Just wanted to let you know I think you uploaded the wrong podcast yesterday. Sounded like it was December 1?
-Sheila
Hey thanks for listening… Sorry about the delayed reply.. I’ve been working alot lately and have been going email through ever so S-l-o-w-l-y. Sorry about the bug in the podcast, I caught it too late
I’m glad you are enjoying the site too.
Thank you!!!!
Hi! Giovanni,
I am on vacation and worried about this new storm. Your weather cam and weather meters are very helpful as they give me now information. I wonder how much snow we will be getting? Thanks so much for your site. It’s great!
Caleb
Hey Gio,
I sent you an email earlier today at you ncweatherlive address. Don’t know how often you check it but I’ll paste in the message here with updated weather info – Roland
***********
Hey Gio,
I hope all is well out your way. We received about 1-2″ of wet snow overnight here at the 3450′ elevation. Receiving moderate snow showers a the moment at 32.5*F. Right now it’s 7:04 PM.
Just wanted to let you know FYI that my weather website has a new address, not sure if I gave it to you already or not: http://www.fassettprop.com
It is actually our business website we use for ftp uploads/downloads but thought I would also put my weather site there as well.
BTW, my Davis Vantage Pro weather station is working flawlessly, thanks for your recommendation. ! I recently moved it to my roof peak as we’ve been doing some major landscaping work and had to move it. I believe I’m getting greater rainfall measurements up there as well as definitely higher wind readings.
Take care,
Roland
Hey Gio,
Just found this link on msnbc.com, dealing with scientists researching the winter of 1861-62 and the possibility of a truly epic series of storms repeating itself. They’ve given this scenario the title: “Frankenstorms” Check it out!
Here’s the link – http://tinyurl.com/yhhycc5
Hi Gio! I’ve been trying to find out what our rainfall to date is in comparison to whatever the norm is…just curious as to how we’re doing this year rain-wise. Is that info available somewhere?
Thank you—and thanks for your weather station, it’s nice to have truly local weather.
Saw your site in the union and glad to have found it. Nice work! I’ll be a regular visitor. I did not see a rss feed option on the site. maybe I missed it?
We found your site after the Union mentioned you in their story about April’s rainfall. We’re new to the area, and definitely avid weather watchers. Glad to see there are plenty of us around here. Certainly appreciate the details and the depth of your stats here. Thanks for all the hard work. It’s much appreciated.
